Pizza Week Highlights

At the start of Pizza Week, we kicked off the morning with Mrs. White’s famous Wake and Shake! We danced to Mambo Italiano before heading inside to get ready for the day.

Each afternoon, and on Wednesday morning, we went around to different classes throughout the week to take part in fun activities based on pizza.

As part of Pizza Week, all the classes visited Mr. Dickson’s Year 6 class to learn about the science behind pizza. First, Mr. Dickson poured about three tablespoons of yeast, one tablespoon of sugar, and a bit of water into a bottle. Then, he stretched a balloon over the top and we waited. After about ten minutes, the yeast expanded, releasing enough carbon dioxide to blow up the balloon!

While we waited, Mr. Dickson and Mrs. Chettle gave us some pizza dough to play with. Then, Mr. Dickson challenged us to create something out of it—it was so much fun!

One of the most memorable lessons was Miss Marriott’s History class. When we entered the classroom, we sat down on the floor, excited to learn. Miss Marriott told us all about where pizza comes from—Naples, Italy! Then, we did some role play, with some of us dressing up as people from the story of how pizza was created.

Did you know that Margherita pizza was named after Queen Margherita?

After that, we were given paper pizzas and had to decorate them with toppings to represent different countries’ flags. It was such a fun and creative lesson—I’ll never forget it!

On Wednesday, instead of our usual French or Spanish lesson, Madame Tate taught us Italian! We learned how to say different pizza toppings, like cheese, tomato, olive, and basil. It was really fun to try a language we don’t usually learn.1

Year 6 had the joy of learning Italian first thing in the morning, and it was brilliant! Once we got the hang of it, we played a game similar to Snap, but with pictures of toppings and their Italian names. Madame Tate made the lesson extremely, very fun!

On the final day of Pizza Week, Mr. Barresi paid us a special visit and, during assembly, demonstrated how to make the perfect pizza! He expertly stretched and kneaded the dough before layering on delicious toppings, including olives, pepperoni, basil, rich tomato sauce, and plenty of gooey cheese.

Each class had the exciting opportunity to design and decorate a pizza box, and in small groups, the children worked together to create their own pizzas. These were then baked to perfection in an outdoor pizza oven. The highlight of the day, of course, was getting to enjoy a slice of our very own handmade pizza!

By the afternoon, the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the school, sparking excitement and making mouths water. Laughter and joy echoed through the halls as children eagerly anticipated their turn to indulge.

We want to extend a huge thank you to all the staff, especially Madame Tate, for organising this incredible week of fun and learning. And an extra-special, ginormous thank you to Mr. Barresi for making the experience truly unforgettable! 🍕🎉
