At Brill, we believe in working closely with parents and carers to support every aspect of our children’s learning — including their personal, social, and emotional development. As part of this, we will soon be beginning our teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSE) as part of our Science and PSHE curriculum.
What is RSE?
RSE stands for Relationships, Sex and Health Education. At primary level, this involves teaching children about friendships, families, their bodies, growing up, and how to stay safe and healthy. It gives children the skills and confidence to navigate relationships and changes in a safe, age-appropriate way.
Why is it important?
This curriculum plays a vital role in helping children develop a positive sense of self, understand appropriate and respectful relationships and learn how to stay safe both in the real world and online. It also helps prepare them for the physical and emotional changes they’ll experience as they grow older.
One of the key parts of our approach is the use of correct terminology and clear, consistent vocabulary rather than nicknames for body parts. This ensures children have accurate knowledge and can communicate confidently, reducing confusion and supporting their safety.
How will we keep you informed?
Letters have been sent out to parents outlining the content that will be covered in your child’s class. This will give you a clear overview of the lessons and topics and help you feel confident about what your child will be learning.
How can you support at home?
Working Together
Our priority is to approach this curriculum area with care, sensitivity and in partnership with you as parents. If you would like to discuss anything in advance or have any worries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s teacher or with myself.
Together, we can ensure that this important learning experience is positive, supportive and empowering for all our pupils.
