We’re excited to share that our pastoral space has a new name, welcome to ‘The Hive’!
A hive is a place of warmth, connection and teamwork, and that’s exactly what this space represents for the children who spend time here. It’s a safe, welcoming environment where they can express themselves, share their feelings, and take part in activities that support their emotional well-being. For many children, The Hive is more than just a room; it’s a space where they feel truly heard and valued. They’ve shared how much it means to them:
“I can be myself when I come in here”
“I feel safe in here, and you understand me”
“It’s a special time just for me”
Alongside talking and listening, there are lots of different activities to help children express their emotions in their own way. They can interact with puppets, share worries with our Worry Monster, or use the cushions with different feeling faces to show how they’re feeling, even when words are hard to find. At The Hive, every child’s emotions are valid, and every voice is heard. We are proud to have this special space where children can feel safe, supported and truly themselves.
This is how the children responded to questions about The Hive:
What does it feel like for you when you’re in this space?
Calming and relaxing.
I can be myself when I come in here, I don’t have to pretend about feelings.
I feel important because I’m just with you.
I feel happy when I’m coming to see you in this room.
It’s like a special time just for me and I can explain all the things I want to say.
I feel safe in here and you understand me.
What type of things do you do in this space?
I explore all the feelings I’ve got and there are books we can read together about lives like mine.
We do worksheets together about friendships, they help me work things out.
I sometimes just talk abut things that have been in my mind that make me worried.
We can make things and draw while we talk.
I use the worry monster lots.
There are puppets to touch and talk to and everything in the room is soft and squishy, I love it.
We use the snowballs to sort out my worries into groups and I throw away the worries that I don’t need anymore. It’s like the book about the bag of worries.
I can use the cushions with faces on and point to the one that is me if i can’t say the words.
What has being in the space done for you?
It’s such an amazing room, I tell my parents how much I love it.
When I go back to class I feel proud because I’ve been honest, even if it was something I did wrong, I can tell you and It’s ok.
My worries go away and I go back to class out of the red zone and feeling better.
My brain feels emptier and I can think of other things and not just my worries.
I like the poster that tells me I am heard and important because I don’t always feel like that in my life.
It’s really nice that I know I can come in here and I will feel better afterwards.
