Welcome to the Year 5 page of our website.
Hello! My name is Maxine, and I’m delighted to be the Year 5 teacher. I have a degree in English and Classics from the University of Manchester, which reflects my lifelong love of language, stories and ideas. Before moving into education, I had a 10-year career as an editor in magazine and book publishing, where I developed an appreciation for how carefully chosen words can inform, entertain and inspire.
My first foray into education was as an English teacher in Japan. Living and working abroad was an experience that deepened my understanding of different cultures and learning styles, and I gained my CELTA language teaching qualification with Oxford Brookes University. After returning to my home county from overseas, I joined Brill School as a Teaching Assistant and later became a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). Those roles confirmed my desire to teach, and I went on to train as a teacher.
Outside the classroom, I love theatre, reading, gardening and an epic walk. I have a particular interest in performance poetry and children’s literature, and I enjoy sharing stories with pupils. I’m really looking forward to a year of learning, curiosity and great conversations together.
Here is some handy information about our routines in Year 5:
In Year 5, our homework will consist of completing a section of our White Rose maths booklets (details below) and a short activity/list of spellings for you to practise.
